High Five For Friday 9/20

Even though it is actually Friday night here, I thought I would still do a little High Five For Friday post. It has been a crazy busy and exciting week. We have been house hunting, car hunting, checking in, going to orientation, and getting lots of other to-dos crossed off. We are feeling very accomplished and can't wait to get completely settled in for the long haul.

ONE

We were cleared to live off base and started house hunting on Monday and fell in love with a place on Tuesday. We were actually surprised by how many places we liked, but the one we decided on was a pretty clear winner. It was somewhat of a chaotic process, which I will share more on later. We have the keys and move in on Monday! Here is a little sneak peek of our house.

We've got a house!

TWO

We also got a car this week. Also more on that later. We will hopefully be getting another one next week. We had to study and take a test in order to get our license here. Thankfully, we both passed. We had to learn to drive on the other side of the road. It has been an adjustment, but we are getting used to it. We have also had to adjust to the craziness of the roads and the drivers around here. It gets pretty nuts, especially when people stop in the middle of the road.

We wanted something interesting, this definitely fit the bill

THREE

We are loving the food here. We can't get enough sushi and ramen. We even went back to our favorite $1 sushi place because we found out it is right down the street from our house! We have tried some interesting things and are excited to check out more restaurants.

FOUR

We found this little slice of paradise down the street from our house. The beach is slightly dirty, with lots of washed up trash, but we just can't get enough of the beautiful colors. We are considering heading up north this weekend to find more beautiful spots.

FIVE

You can take us out of America, but we will never give up our Mexican food. Apparently, they think Americans really like Mexican food, because they have tons of Mexican Restaurants on the island. We went searching for one tonight when our normal weekend craving hit. We first found a food truck with burritos, but the weather wasn't great so we opted for a sit down place instead. It is called Mike's Tex Mex and is right off of Highway 58 by Camp Foster. The chips and guacamole were definitely up to par. My enchiladas met my standards as well. The atmosphere was a ton of fun. We were happy to know that it is possible to find good Mexican on the island.

We are hoping for a fun and relaxing weekend in preparation for another crazy week next week. There is so much to do on the island, we can't seem to decide what we want to do first! I already have a rather long Okinawa bucket list.

    1. Thanks! We think the car is pretty cool, too. I can't believe I will wake up to that view every morning. It really doesn't feel real.

    1. I drove off base for the first time today. It just takes some getting used to. People cut in and out of traffic like crazy and people still go for over 5 seconds after the light turns red.

  3. I just found you from the H54F link up. Getting a house is so exciting! I just moved into my own house a little over a year ago and it can definitely be trying, but SO worth it! :)

    1. Luckily we weren't buying the house, just renting while here in Okinawa. I can imagine that buying a house would be a lot crazier than this process was. This is the biggest place we have ever lived in, though, so we are excited!

    1. It is called a Will and I think it is by Toyota. They are pretty popular here, along with a lot of other very small cars haha

    1. There are so many small cars here! It is called a Will. I have always driven an SUV so I am still trying to get used to it. It does make it easier to drive here, though.

  6. I'm so excited that I found a blogger that is living in Okinawa!! I can't wait to follow along on all your adventures! I taught English there for 2 years and got engaged to my Marine there (I wrote about how I wound up in Okinawa here http://www.benandnicoleshea.com/2013/08/how-jacks-story-began.html).
Anyways, excited to read about your experience so far.

  7. I see you guys really enjoyed the day! Great company, great ride, great view and great food! Nothing beats a trip that's involved with good food. Judging on the photos you shared, it was definitely a treat for your taste buds. If you are still looking for more sushi goodness, there are places that serve exquisite sushi. Thanks! :)
