High Five For Friday 10/11

Hello all! Happy Friday!
{ONE}
I love the Japanese culture. People are extremely kind and generous. They do things that just make sense, unlike us Americans. The one thing I cannot deal with, though, is the driving. It seriously drives me up the wall. I don't mind driving on the other side of the road. I honestly think I kind of prefer the left side of the road. But this stopping in the middle of the road business is not working for me. I guess people stop whenever they get a phone call. I'm down with that because it is safer and people annoy me when they talk on the phone while driving. But, you are taking up an entire lane of traffic and I am stuck behind you! Parking is also hard to come by here so people park on the "side" of the road to run into a business. The "side" of the road is actually in the middle of a lane. See exhibit A below.

I feel like our house is really coming together and starting to feel homey. Something about plants and decorations make a place just feel more put together. I snagged two trees for $40 off of Okinawa Yard Sales. That's pretty awesome in my book since they were going for $80 a piece at the store here. Wow, is that sad that I am that excited about trees? Also, I may not have been able to make it to the gym this week (cause I am just so busy and all), but these stairs are sure giving me a workout.

I have started to do some work on the office. I am so excited about it, which you could have guessed if you saw this post. I had found quite a few office things at the dollar store here on the island. I decided to make them a bit more exciting by spray painting them gold. I can't wait to finish up our little office and have a little "me" space.

Again with the mirror selfies?? What's happening to me? This one also has a reason, though. Since I am trying not to/can't shop, I decided I would start shopping my own closet and play with new outfits and rediscover my old stuff. The only problem? I don't have anywhere to wear half of my closet since a lot of the things I own are pretty dressy. This skirt still has the tag on it. Oops, guess I really don't need to shop. I am hoping my "closet shopping" will cure my itch to go real shopping.

{Five}
Even though it is ridiculously hot here still, I am trying to embrace fall. It has been really hard for me to get in the fall mindset because it just doesn't feel like fall. I put this little reminder on our chalkboard to get me more in the fall spirit.

And that's pretty much about as exciting as my week got. Life of a stay at home wife right there. Jake has a four day weekend this weekend so we have lots of exciting things planned! Yay for no typhoons ruining our island exploration!

  2. If the Japanes stop in the road so often you'd think they would have wrecks left and right! How dangerous! If Americans did that everyone would have intense road rage and start killing each other! I like your DIY! I love anything gold! Have a good weekend!

    2. Lol, I wondered why more Canadians didn't have accidents when I first came here. But I suppose it's about what you've been taught to watch out for. I've discovered each countries hazard perception focuses a lot on the hazards of that culture! At least they don't use their cell phones and drive, that's a dreadful thing in Ontario.

  3. I can totally relate to a lot of this - especially number 5! My husband and I relocated to Manila for a job about six months ago and it's been tough getting into the Fall spirit when it is SO HOT here! :)

  4. Those look so nice painted gold! I'm having a major gold moment in my house right now, it's a nice accent for the fall weather here.

  6. I am enjoying reading about the Japanese culture from a North American perspective. Being an expat is so much fun and I'm glad that you're trying your best to focus on the positive and find things that bring you joy (e.g. fall sign). If you're feeling super dooper isolated, have a look at the expat blogs online, there are SO many. I recently just registered my blog with one of the many expat resource centres.

    I look forward to seeing your journey progress. Having moved to Canada in 2010, I know how horrible culture shock can be but I also remember the joys of seriously enjoying a new country!

  7. Closet shopping is a great idea - I know I've been guilty of finding things with the tag on them later. ;)
    I like the idea of working on the personal space in the office. That's something I've been working on with our office area but I keep getting derailed with other things. Maybe I can take a little inspiration from your efforts.

  8. First, that kind of driving would make me insane! I can't imagine dealing with random cars just stopped in the middle of the road. Second, I love what you did with those pieces for your office. Isn't it amazing what a little spray paint can do? Third, you are adorable and I'm so glad you linked up with me! Really, honestly, looking forward to reading more from you :) Thanks so much for linking up with The Collective, hope to see you back next week!
